Download The Fourteenth of September in PDF Full Online by Rita Dragonette and published by She Writes Press. This book was released on 2018-09-17 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rita Dragonette has written a strong-hearted and authentic novel about a naive young girl and her struggle to reconcile the dissonance between the world she sees and the world she was raised to believe in. Judy is truly a quiet hero; you won’t forget her.” —Jacquelyn Mitchard, author of The Deep End of the Ocean An enthralling historical novel set during the peak of the Vietnam War and told through the rare perspective of a young woman, who traces her path to self-discovery and a “Coming of Conscience.” Perfect for fans of Kate Quinn and Heather Morris. On September 14, 1969, Private First Class Judy Talton celebrates her nineteenth birthday by secretly joining the campus anti-Vietnam War movement. In doing so, she jeopardizes both the army scholarship that will secure her future and her relationship with her military family. But Judy’s doubts have escalated with the travesties of the war. Who is she if she stays in the army? What is she if she leaves? When the first date pulled in the Draft Lottery turns up as her birthday, she realizes that if she were a man, she’d have been Number One―off to Vietnam with an under-fire life expectancy of six seconds. The stakes become clear, propelling her toward a life-altering choice as fateful as that of any draftee. Judy’s story speaks to the poignant clash of young adulthood, early feminism, and war, offering an ageless inquiry into the domestic politics of protest when the world stops making sense.

Book excerpt: An inspirational calendar of daily quotations selected by Naljorpa Druk-tsal and Naljorma Kha’drön from teachings given by Ngak’chang Rinpoche and Khandro Déchen. These quotations provide fresh insights into essential Vajrayana Buddhism. They range from hilarity to piercing directness. This approach is characteristic of the creative, contemporary prose and poetry for which these English Lamas are known. They are the Aro gTér Lineage Lamas and have specialised in expressing the Nyingma Inner Tantras, with an emphasis on incorporating practice in everyday life. Their enthusiasm for both the secular and religious Arts, inspired by Kyabyé Düd’jom Rinpoche, is central to what they teach. They address 21st Century society whilst remaining true to the ancient tradition in which they were trained by their Lamas. Interspersed in this calendar, are quotations from Kyabyé Düd’jom Jig’drel Yeshé Dorje Rinpoche, HE Trülku Ögyen Dro’dül Thrin-lé Kün-kyab Rinpoche and Khar-trül Wangchuk Rig’dzin Rinpoche.

Book excerpt: William McGonagall was born in Edinburgh in 1830. His father was a poor hand-loom weaver, and his work took his family to Glasgow, then to Dundee. William attended school for eighteen months before the age of seven, and received no further formal education. Later, as a mill worker, he used to read books in the evening, taking great interest in Shakespeare's plays. In 1877, McGonagall suddenly discovered himself 'to be a poet'. Since then, thousands of people the world over have enjoyed the verse of Scotland's alternative national poet. This volume brings together the three famous collections - "Poetic Gems", "More Poetic Gems" and "Last Poetic Gems", and includes all the valuable autobiographical material which appeared in the original volumes. It includes all his most famous works, as well as previously unpublished poems.

Download The European Outthrust and Encounter in PDF Full Online by David B. Quinn and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For half a century David Beers Quinn wrote on the history of the early relationship between England and North America. This volume was presented in tribute to his meticulous and authoritative but cautious scholarship, on the occasion of his 85th birthday. It includes his "Reflections" on a lifetime of research, and his bibliography. But his interests in the early period of "the expansion of Europe" have never been limited to England or North America, and this volume accordingly takes as its theme the widest historical context of the subject and period, the whole European outthrust and encounter, in its first phase. Ten contributions by recognized scholars provide select exemplars, to serve as a stimulating introduction to this vast theme. Three overview essays deal with specific regions of the outthrust, chosen because of differences in outcome: Ethiopia, the Far East, and Siberia. The remaining essays consider specific episodes in localities ranging from Guayana to China, and their discursive echoes, and are essentially concerned with a leading feature of David Quinn’s scholarship, the discovery, examination and interpretation of sources. A preliminary essay discusses the theme and links the various contributions within a framework of critical generalization.
Download Male Suicide and Masculinity in 19th-century Britain in PDF Full Online by Lyndsay Galpin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-04-07 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how interpretations of suicidal motives were guided by gendered expectations of behaviour, and that these expectations were constructed to create meaning and understanding for family, friends and witnesses. Providing an insight into how people of this era understood suicidal behaviour and motives, it challenges the assertion that suicide was seen as a distinctly feminine act, and that men who took their own lives were feminized as a result. Instead, it shows that masculinity was understood in a more nuanced way than gender binaries allow, and that a man's masculinity was measured against other men. Focusing on four common narrative types; the love-suicide, the unemployed suicide, the suicide of the fraudster or speculator, and the suicide of the dishonoured solider, it provides historical context to modern discussions about the crisis of masculinity and rising male suicide rates. It reveals that narratives around male suicides are not so different today as they were then, and that our modern model of masculinity can be traced back to the 19th century.
