Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A murder aboard a steamboat forces Abraham Lincoln to make a fateful choice—one on which the future of the nation may hang, if his client doesn’t first—in this gripping follow-up to critically acclaimed author Jonathan Putnam’s “masterfully crafted” (Alex Grecian) debut, These Honored Dead. Newly minted trial lawyer Abraham Lincoln is riding the circuit, traveling by carriage with other lawyers and a judge to bring justice to the remote parts of Illinois. Meanwhile, Lincoln’s close friend Joshua Speed steams up the Mississippi River aboard a steamboat owned by Speed’s father. Suddenly, his journey is interrupted when a rigged card game turns to violence—and then murder. Speed enlists Lincoln to defend the accused, but soon they come to discover that more than just the card games are crooked aboard the Speed family’s ship. As the day of judgment hurtles toward them, Lincoln must fight to save the life of his client while also preserving the cause he holds so dear. Meticulously researched and deftly plotted, Jonathan F. Putnam’s second Lincoln and Speed mystery, Perish from the Earth, revolves around a true historical murder that, while nearly forgotten today, was one of the most infamous crimes of the nineteenth century and played a key role in driving the nation toward civil war.

Download Change: Adapt or Perish in PDF Full Online by Prof. Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi and published by ZAWYAT ALMAARFEH. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prof. Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi examines the myriad social, economic, technological and political changes currently taking place globally, exploring the extent to which these changes will redefine humanity’s role, function and position, even the very concept of human existence itself. Change, Adapt, or Perish explores change from an analytical perspective, while also bringing together ideas on how we can coexist with it, mitigating its negative aspects in order to leverage its positive effects. While technology is the most prolific driver of change in modern societies, Change, Adapt, or Perish looks at a broader array of ways in which change is taking place. Education, IT, jobs, warfare and energy are all being transformed by the process of change, but so too is language. Prof. Jamal takes an in-depth look at the challenges facing the Arabic language and presents solutions for how it can be protected. The book also focuses on the impact that change has on some communities that are excluded from it, an important aspect of the conversation about the future of the Middle East. By providing a conceptual framework to understand change, and the nuances of its impact on education, employment, communication, and the future of security, warfare and energy, Prof. Jamal also provides an important examination of the position of the UAE and the wider Arab world in relation to change, as well as a strategy to positively respond to it. The UAE has taken a proactive approach in preparing for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and while the implications of change are neither identical nor inevitable in all societies, Prof. Jamal reveals the inherent advantage industrialized communities will have in facing these implications. Traditional societies, such as those of the Arab world, may lack the education, skills and cultural adaptability to respond effectively to change, highlighting the importance of the proactive steps being taken by the UAE to not only confront the changes taking place, but actively leverage them to enhance the country.

Download Unite or Perish in PDF Full Online by Muchie, Mammo and published by Africa Institute of South Africa. This book was released on 2015-03-26 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an outcome of the third conference in the successful 'Scramble for Africa' International Conference series, now renamed the 'African Unity for Renaissance' International Conference. The book provides an overview and contains profound analyses of the important issues pertaining to African Unity and African Renaissance. The book is accessible to a wide variety of readers, ranging from policy makers to researchers, from teachers to students, and for anyone concerned with the further development of the African continent and Africa's renewal. The book outlines the various issues that animate Africa's stand in the global political, socio-economic, cultural and technological arenas. The chapters gathered in the book critically examine and evaluate the burning questions and challenges with which Africa is grappling. This book is one of the vital texts for understanding how Africa will manage to navigate the tumultuous waters of globalisation as Africa has just recently emerged out of the horrors of slavery, colonialism, apartheid, neo-colonialism and genocide, and is still wrestling with unceasing conflicts, popular unrest, neo-imperialism, coloniality and mushrooming insurgency. The chapters provide a much-needed insight into the issue of whether Africa has achieved genuine and meaningful independence after 50 years of the founding of the OAU and whether the baby-steps Africa has taken towards unity are worth celebrating. The contributors highlight these and allied issues with a view to capture more public attention in order to stimulate debate and usher in a new phase in the quest for African Unity and Renaissance. The contributors are distinguished authors and established and emerging scholars in their own domains. While a majority of the contributors are from the continent, distinguished scholars from around the globe have joined their African fellows in dealing with the relevant issues regarding Africa's place in an ever changing world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times called this famous guide to a more rewarding life “sound and solid, the product of a richly furnished mind, a book of wisdom.” Written by one of America’s most distinguished psychiatrists, Dr. Smiley Blanton, it has already found its way into some 200,000 American homes. Hundreds of readers have written to the author saying they were helped, inspired—and wanted more. In response to these letters, Dr. Blanton added an enormously valuable new section showing how men and women of all ages can give themselves as second chance at happiness—this section, titled “On Making a Fresh Start,” is included in this Expanded Edition, which was first published in 1957. “I believe that it is possible to achieve an emotional change with the insight developed through books. Books can make a change in one’s philosophy and attitude toward life. That is why so many books of the world are so deeply cherished. “It is in this hope that I write, in an effort to bring to people the hard-won truths of my observation over many years of life and during more than forty years of practice in psychiatry.”—Dr. Smiley Blanton, Introduction

Download Manage or Perish? in PDF Full Online by José Guimón and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 621 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Adapt or perish, now as ever, is Nature's inexorable imperative. " -H. G. Wells, Mind at the End of Its Tether (1946) Doctors are trained to treat people suffering from various diseases. This is the main form of their activity and usually the reason for which they selected medicine as their profession. The notion that they should become managers and engage in activi ties such as programming, calculating cost, assessing cost-benefit ratios, and thinking about pricing in accordance with the social utility of their intervention, is both foreign and abhorrent to them. They are sometimes willing to say how much they need in order to have a well-functioning service: usually they prefer to state what specific apparatus and other things they require without specifying the price of their demand. They can be persuaded to add a price tag to what they think is necessary for their work: but that was about as far as they would go, until recently. The growing emphasis on human rights over the past few decades, the greater emphasis on quality of life and the public's heightened expectations about their health led, in many industrialized countries, to a greater demand for health services. This, com bined with improved possibilities of diagnosis and treatment (at higher cost!), led to a significant increase in financial demands which made governments and health-care systems uneasy and ready to accept any solution that would stop the spiral of seem ingly endless cost augmentation.
