Book excerpt: We live complex and busy lives. Returning to nature can often provide glimpses into the simplicity we left behind centuries ago. While there is no going back there is certainly much that can be learnt from the natural environment that we can use to enrich and broaden our lives. Flight at Dawn is about two journeys: A physical journey into a wildlife reserve; and a spiritual and intellectual journey of the mind as Tony and his two boys explore the landscapes and the species that occupy them. The book discusses the lessons that can be learnt form both the experiences they have on their journey and from the creatures they encounter. Tony also shares commentary on topical issues and on some of the vexing challenges and paradoxes of the working environment. The book's key focus areas are leadership and organizational behaviour, but there are many other lessons that can be applied to the way one lives one's own life. Tony Frost is a recognized conservationist and strategist, and has received many awards in this arena. He is passionate about helping young people fully appreciate the future that belongs to them, and persuading the current generation of leaders that they owe the youth a positive and healthy future. He is founder and CEO of Sirocco Strategy Management, CEO of the Queen's College Foundation, and a board member of the South African Biodiversity Institute. Book jacket.

Heavy in metaphor and abstraction, they are designed to make one dwell on the values of commitment and responsibility. Although the lead story is about a flock of migrating mallards, it will quickly become obvious that the story is really about our life and how to deal with disaster or tragedy. The other stories are equally thought provoking, but also designed to entertain and inspire.

Book excerpt: Frank Broome was a 15 year old schoolboy when he experienced the three major blitzes in his home city of Coventry and at the age of 17 volunteered for the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve in 1942 for pilot training. This autobiography, based on his copious diary entries and log books traces his pilot training in the UK, Canada and the USA where he flew single and twin-engined aircraft. Despite his almost perfect training record he, like many of his fellow trainees at this time, was not to gain his R.A.F. wings. There was a shortage of air crew, other than pilots, and Frank eventually transferred to an air-gunnery course. On his return to the UK he undertook operational crew training on Wellington as a tail gunner and made operational training sorties over enemy territory shortly after the D-Day landings. His crew then converted to four-engined heavy bombers first the Halifax and then the Lancaster. He gives first-hand detailed accounts of the many missions during his tour with No. 626 Squadron during the height of Bomber Commands massed raids over Germany and occupied Europe. Excitement abounds with narrow squeaks from enemy night-fighters, radar directed anti-aircraft fire and other hazards of this most dangerous task. He eventually flew with two Wing Commanders and a Squadron Leader with crews who gained several gallantry awards. His book is written with a skill that portrays the dangers inherent in his task, the humor of service life and the sound reasons why his generation were proud to fly with Bomber Command.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death of a 130 year Oligarchy. Volume 2 in The Dung Beetles of Liberia series. In April of 1979, Ken Verrier and his wife, Sam, return to Liberia to buy diamonds. They did not return to get caught up in a rice riot and a coup de'etat. But that's what happens. Ken witnesses and unwittingly participates in a period of Liberia's tumultuous yet poorly documented history---the overthrow of the Tolbert presidency and ultimately the end of the Americo-Liberian one hundred thirty-three years of political and social dominance. Details of President Tolbert's assassination are sketchy, but through Ken's association with his Americo friends from the past, the CIA agents he meets, and the Liberian military he is forced to deal with, a believable scenario emerges. While describing the once beautiful country and a kind and generous people, Meier intertwines terrifying tales of the atrocities committed that account for the future pain of an entire nation.

As intense and absorbing as a suspense novel, At Dawn We Slept is the unparalleled and exhaustive account of the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor. It is widely regarded as the definitive assessment of the events surrounding one of the most daring and brilliant naval operations of all time. During his birth, his mother almost lost her life trying to save his. There were so many complications that some people said he would have been better off if he had been still born, rather than to have lived. He was an ugly baby. He cried a lot when strangers held him. They outwardly scorned him, and they secretly abused him. A big brown medicine ball worn over his bulging naval caused him to be cut off from his little friends much of the time. He grew up in a kind, loving, and faithful sharecropper family. But he saw suffering in his family early. When he was just six years old, his family was thrust out of their home and cast into the wilderness. This happened because his parents tried to make progress. They tried to buy some land and break the sharecroppers curse from the family. The wilderness living experience was tough. His mother's faithful prayers helped the family to cope; the barren land, the creeks, the woods, the wild animals, the things that crawled the earth. Meeting miss Dolly, a scary but sad woman, and seeing his brother dangling over fast moving water after falling off the foot log were terrifying experiences for him. Could he pull himself up by his bootstraps? Well, he started a self-assessment program in seventh grade. He left home at age sixteen hitch hiking, down a long, lonely, dangerous highway. He was searching for a schoolhouse.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE AND NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER In the first volume of his monumental trilogy about the liberation of Europe in World War II, Pulitzer Prize winner Rick Atkinson tells the riveting story of the war in North Africa. The liberation of Europe and the destruction of the Third Reich is a story of courage and enduring triumph, of calamity and miscalculation. In this first volume of the Liberation Trilogy, Rick Atkinson shows why no modern reader can understand the ultimate victory of the Allied powers without a grasp of the great drama that unfolded in North Africa in 1942 and 1943. That first year of the Allied war was a pivotal point in American history, the moment when the United States began to act like a great power. Beginning with the daring amphibious invasion in November 1942, An Army at Dawn follows the American and British armies as they fight the French in Morocco and Algeria, and then take on the Germans and Italians in Tunisia. Battle by battle, an inexperienced and sometimes poorly led army gradually becomes a superb fighting force. Central to the tale are the extraordinary but fallible commanders who come to dominate the battlefield: Eisenhower, Patton, Bradley, Montgomery, and Rommel. Brilliantly researched, rich with new material and vivid insights, Atkinson's narrative provides the definitive history of the war in North Africa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip Caputo's passion for travel and adventure was inspired by the works of Joseph Conrad, Jack London, and Herman Melville, and through the years this passion led to a rugged writer's life, filled with hair-raising experiences in the jungles of Vietnam, the rubble of Beirut, and the savannas of Africa. In the Shadows of the Morning collects Caputo's essays for the first time, each imbued with the powerful and memorable writing for which he has become so well known. In "The Ahab Complex," Caputo recalls a life-and-death struggle with a majestic giant blue marlin off the coast of Florida whose quarter-ton body "lit up as if a gigantic light had flashed in the water." He recounts his travels in Kenya's largest national park among the only lions to have a natural tendency to stalk and eat human beings, and where the accounts of their gruesome escapades invaded his dreams. In the title piece, he reflects on a harrowing trip down the Alaskan river that nearly claimed his son's life, nature's indifference to human loss, and an evocative account of letting go. In the Shadows of the Morning is a fascinating journey through a lifetime of profound experiences. Adventurers and lovers of great writing will welcome this collection of finely crafted essays by one of America's most gifted writers.

Book excerpt: Commended for the 2009 Best Books for Kids & Teens Canadian World War II pilot Charley Fox, now in his late eighties, has had a thrilling life, especially on the day in July 1944 in France when he spotted a black staff car, the kind usually employed to drive high-ranking Third Reich dignitaries. Already noted for his skill in dive-bombing and strafing the enemy, Fox went in to attack the automobile. As it turned out, the car contained famed German General Erwin Rommel, the Desert Fox, and Charley succeeded in wounding him. Rommel, who at the time was the Germans’ supreme military commander in France orchestrating the Nazis’ resistance to the D-day invasion, was never the same after that. Author Steve Pitt focuses on this seminal event in Charley Fox’s life and in the war, but he also provides fascinating aspects of the period, including profiles of noted ace pilots Buzz Beurling and Billy Bishop, Jr., and Great Escape architect Walter Floody, as well as sidebars about Hurricanes, Spitfires, and Messerschmitts.
