Download The Work of the British Law Commissions in PDF Full Online by Shona Wilson Stark and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-07-13 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Law Commission (of England and Wales) and the Scottish Law Commission were both established in 1965 to promote the reform of the laws of their respective jurisdictions. Since then, they have each produced hundreds of reports across many areas of law. They are independent of government yet rely on governmental funding and governmental approval of their proposed projects. They also rely on both government and Parliament (and, occasionally, the courts or other bodies) to implement their proposals. This book examines the tension between independence and implementation and recommends how a balance can best be struck. It proposes how the Commissions should choose their projects given that their duties outweigh their resources, and how we should assess the success, or otherwise, of their output. Countries around the world have created law reform bodies in the Commissions' image. They may wish to reflect on the GB Commissions' responses to the changes and challenges they have faced to reappraise their own law reform machinery. Equally, the GB Commissions may seek inspiration from other commissions' experiences. The world the GB Commissions inhabit now is very different from when they were established. They have evolved to remain relevant in the face of devolution, the UK's changing relationship with the European Union, increasing pressure for accountability and decreasing funding. Further changes to secure the future of independent law reform are advanced in this book.

Download Steady The Buffs! in PDF Full Online by Mark Connelly and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 2006-11-30 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book fully revises standard regimental history by establishing the framework and background to the regiment's role in the Great War. It tests the current theories about the British army in the war and some of the conclusions of modern military historians. In recent years a fascinating reassessment of the combat performance of the British Army in the Great War has stressed the fact that the British Army ascended a 'learning curve' during the conflict resulting in a modernmilitary machine of awesome power. Research carried out thus far has been on a grand scale with very few examinations of smaller units. This study of the battalion of the Buffs has tested these theoretical ideas. The central questions addressed in this study are:• The factors that dominated the officer-man relationship during the war.• How identity and combat efficiency was maintained in the light of heavy casualties.• The relative importance of individual characters to the efficiency of a battalion as opposed to the 'managerial structures' of the BEF.• The importance of brigade and division to the performance of a battalion.• The effective understanding and deployment of new weapons.• The reactions of individual men to the trials of war.• The personal and private reactions of the soldiers' communities in Kent.Using previously uncovered material, this book adds a significant new chapter to our understanding of the British army on the Western Front, and the way its home community in East Kent reacted to experience. It reveals the way in which the regiment adjusted to the shock of modern warfare, and the bloody learning curve the Buffs ascended as they shared the British Expeditionary Force's march towards final victory.

Download Sasakwa Ryoichi in PDF Full Online by Seizaburō Satō and published by Eastbridge. This book was released on 2006 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Sasakawa Ryoichi was a remarkable man. Born in Kansai in the late years of Japan's great Meiji Era, his long life'he died in 1995 at the age of 96?spanned almost an entire century of tumultuous change. Any appraisal of his career must take into account the drastic, almost seismic transformations that befell Japan'and the entire world'within that time? ?Jailed with other Party members for three years in 1935 for extortion in an action instigated by political enemies, he was released after acquittal by an appeals court'in time to be elected as an independent candidate for the Lower House of the Diet. There he served throughout the war period. A firm if highly critical supporter of Japan's World War II war effort, he voluntarily entered Sugamo prison in 1945 as a suspected war criminal under the American Occupation; his book Sugamo Diary, published after his release, was an impassioned defense of Japan's wartime leaders? ?Looking back from a foreigner's perspective at the biography of Sasakawa Ryoichi, his lifetime transition from a right-wing pre-war nationalist to a world-class philanthropist seems like an extra-ordinary achievement in human chemistry. But for Sasakawa, a man who lived with his times, it seemed very natural. ?Gifted with a strong will and an independent social conscience all his own, he followed his instincts to make the best of situations as they changed. A man of strong convictions, and never loath to express them, he was a lightning rod of controversy during the leftist-rightist arguments of the post-war period. Yet in a way, his political evolution tells the story of his century'and it highlights the changing and expanding role of his country, from beleaguered, nervous island country to peaceful economic super-power? ?as a long-time student of things Japanese, I find Sato's biography of this remarkable man makes a valuable postscript to the history of Japan in the 20th Century.' ?from the Preface by Frank Gibney

Download Eisenhower's Nuclear Calculus in Europe in PDF Full Online by Gates Brown and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-11-30 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a reliance on nuclear weapons, President Eisenhower hoped to provide a defense strategy that would allow the U.S. to maintain its security requirements without creating an economic burden. This defense strategy, known as the New Look, benefited the U.S. Air Force with its focus on strategic nuclear weapons. The U.S. also required European missile bases to deploy their intermediate range ballistic missiles, while efforts continued to develop U.S.- based intercontinental ballistic missiles. Deploying such missiles to Europe required balancing regional European concerns with U.S. domestic security priorities. In the wake of the Soviet Sputnik launch in 1957, the U.S. began to fear Soviet missile capabilities. Using European missile bases would mitigate this domestic security issue, but convincing NATO allies to base the missiles in their countries raised issues of sovereignty and weapons control and ran the risk of creating divisions in the NATO alliance.

Download Oscar Wilde's Elegant Republic in PDF Full Online by David Charles Rose and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-14 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why was Paris so popular as a place of both innovation and exile in the late nineteenth century? Using French, English and American sources, this first volume of a trilogy provides a possible answer with a detailed exploration of both the city and its communities, who, forming a varied cast of colourful characters from duchesses to telephonists, artists to beggars, and dancers to diplomats, crowd the stage. Through the throng moves Oscar Wilde as the connecting thread: Wilde exploratory, Wilde triumphant, Wilde ruined. This use of Wilde as a central figure provides both a cultural history of Paris and a view of how he assimilated himself there. By interweaving fictional representations of Paris and Parisians with historical narrative, Paris of the imagination is blended with the topography of the city described by Victor Hugo as ‘this great phantom composed of darkness and light’. This original treatment of the belle époque is couched in language accessible to all who wish to explore Paris on foot or from an armchair.
